From freshman orientation to the Jefferson Parish Library card campaign, Buc scholars have been busy in the West Jefferson High School Library Media Center. Incoming freshman received library orientation lessons which included scavenger hunts to familiarize them with the library’s layout and many resources. Classes have also been taking advantage of the many informational skills lessons provided by the library. On September 18, 2018, a record number of students showed up to the library at their lunch break to apply for a Jefferson Parish Public Library card. This year’s campaign theme was “Get a library card, and check out something incredible. ” The Incredibles II movie characters are the Honorary Chairs for Library Card Sign Up Month 2018 through the American Library Association. West Jefferson scholars participated in an Incredibles II themed reception where volunteers from West Jefferson High School’s Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) helped to organize and manage the event The JAG students did an excellent job of assisting students with filling out their applications, guiding them to complete the “My Library is Incredible” promotions, decorating, and directing the flow of traffic! Many thanks to Mrs. Natalie Juneau, teen librarian at Jefferson Parish’s West Bank Regional Library, and Ms. Elisa Blanche, JAG instructor at West Jefferson High School, for making the event a huge success! Looking on the horizon, WJHS students are highly anticipating Banned Books and Teen Read Week, two events sponsored by the library, in near future.
