West Jefferson High School Library News
West Jefferson’s High School Library Media Center has been a hub of activity since opening in August with no signs of slowing down in the near future. In addition to the usual orientation, and use of the library for academic and leisure purposes, students have been participating in incentive based programs to enhance learning and enrichment.
The following programs/ activities were well attended:
WJHS Book Club
The first official meeting of the West Jefferson High School Library’s Book Club was September 7, 2017. Participants plan to read and share books of interest as well as perform literacy related community service projects this school year. The club’s faculty sponsors are Ms. Jonquil Washington, Advanced Path Instructor, and librarians, Ms. George and Ms. Adams. The group meets every other Thursday in the library @ lunch. So far, the club’s members assisted with the publicizing of this year’s Banned Book Week’s activities. Students could have signed up to join the book club at either the school’s freshman, sophomore and junior or senior orientations or at the West Jefferson’s Club Drive in August. Everyone who signed up had a chance to win an ITunes card. The winner of the ITunes card was Ms. Aaliyah Phillips.
Jefferson Parish Library Card Campaign @ West Jeff
Students were able to sign up for their very own JPL library cards at West Jefferson High School’s Library on September 19, 2017. Ms. Natalie Juneau from the West Bank Regional Branch signed up 25 students as well as provided information about the benefits of using the library card including access to online tutoring and databases. Banned Books Week @ West Jeff
The West Jefferson High School Library sponsored Banned Books Week Campaign took place September 25th through September 29th. All activities during that week took place at both lunches and included:
- An informational/sign up session for ALA’s #Rebel Reader Tournament via Twitter
- A Banned books arts and crafts day where students decorated and made Banned Books Week themed color sheets and fortune tellers
- A “Caught Reading Banned Books” Mugshot Poster photo session where students’ “mugshots” were taken of them “caught reading” banned and or challenged books
- A video presentation and live read out of banned and challenged books
- A Banned and Challenged Books Themed Bingo where students won prizes
Students’ names were placed in a grand prize drawing each time they attended a WJHS Banned Books event. The winner s of this year’s drawing are Charles Burbank, Semaj Robinson, and Faith Brown.
On the horizon includes a continuation of the Louisiana Teen Readers’ Choice campaign where students are checking out and reading the nominated books as well as Teen Read Week which is scheduled for October 9th-13th.
