The West Jefferson High School library media center is the place to be. The use of the library by the students is not limited to morning and lunch visits, though the attendance at both times is constantly increasing, but the opportunities for librarian/teacher collaboration and special incentive programs drive the demand for and importance of attending the West Jefferson Library Media Center.

The library media center serves as an extension of the classroom, therefore, librarian/teacher collaboration is encouraged. Recently, Ms. Domecia Brown’s class completed a research project on atoms. Ms. Brown developed the project and collaborated with Ms. George, one of West Jefferson High School library media specialists, who instructed and provided support to the students on using the correct resources and materials as they employed proper research techniques. The students continued to use the databases to access information for their volcano and earthquake projects.

Mr. Thibodeaux’s ELA students benefited from the librarian/teacher collaborative efforts in the instruction of the use of the GALE databases and typing.com. Students completed an African American History month scavenger hunt using the resource’s Biography in Context database with Ms. Adams, the other library media specialist at West Jefferson High School. Winners of the scavenger hunt received Valentine themed prizes. In preparation for future online assessments, students also accessed the typing.com website through CLEVER and practiced honing their typing skills.

On February 1, 2017, our students had an opportunity to vote for their favorite Louisiana Teen Readers’ Choice book of 2017. There was an area set up and decorated with a “party” theme. Students who voted had their voices heard and received Valentine themed goody bags.
To commemorate African American History Month, students took part in the library sponsored, school-wide, daily African American History Trivia contest. Every day, a question was read during the morning announcements. The first three students who searched for the answers and brought their written, correct answers to the library at their lunch period won a special prize, and had their names placed in a grand prize drawing. The questions also appeared on the school’s website.
Ms. George and Ms. Adams welcome continued interest in the West Jefferson High School Library Media Center. Through morning and lunch visits, librarian/teacher collaboration, and special events and programs, library media specialists are determined to provide support and enrichment to the faculty, staff and students. Stay tuned for future library events and learning opportunities!
