h renaissance  Do you know who broke the PGA’s color barrier by becoming its first African American member? His name was Charles Sifford. He was invited to the PGA tour in 1960. This fact and others were discovered in the month of February at West Jefferson High School. West Jefferson’s Library Media Center celebrated African American History Month with a series of activities highlighting the achievements of notable African Americans.

There was a daily trivia contest where students listened for the question of the day over the announcements. Students searched for the answers and received small prizes if they were the first of three students to come to the library at their lunch periods with the correct answer. Those students’ names went into a grand prize drawing on February 29, 2016. Ms. Xin Jiang was the winner of the grand prize drawing. She received a basket of goodies to enjoy.Xin Jiang

The library also sponsored book trailers of African American themed and authored titles, a Jeopardy game, a puzzle contest, and a Harlem Renaissance day. The students enjoyed these activities and the light refreshments provided. Students were also encouraged to explore African American History through the library’s vast resources.
