April is a special time at West Jefferson’s High School Library. Not only do we commemorate National School Library Month, but we celebrate National Library Week. This year’s theme was: Libraries =Strong Communities. We celebrated April 8th-April 13th.
Activities included a book talk from Ms. Natalie Juneau, Librarian of the Teens Department with Jefferson Parish’s Public Library. Thanks to Ms. Blanche’s JAG class and to students visiting at both lunches for being so engaged and showing an interest in the books presented.
There were also book trailers of the 2019-2020 Louisiana Teen Choice’s nominated titles shown at both lunches. Students participated in a “Guess Who” Contest where they had to guess who were the faculty and staff members behind pictures of their favorite books. The student winner of that contest was Ms. Dynastie Cheneau. Ms. Blanche was the faculty member winner of the contest. Students also participated in a LTRC themed bingo for small prizes.
The week prior to National Library Week, we showed segments of the movie, The Hate You Give. The movie was based on the novel by the same name whose author is Angie Thomas. The book is one of the Louisiana Teen Readers’ Choice nominated books for 2019-2020. Special thanks goes to Ms. Blanche and her Job for America’s Graduates volunteers for assisting our students with supervising the movie and serving popcorn.
Finally, throughout the month of April, we will post book commercials that feature our students talking about and recommending their favorite books to their classmates. Each event was well attended and lots of fun.
